I Was Looking Back to See ... (EMAIL FOR PRICE)
Inspired by the music of Massive Attack, this painting is romantic, melancholic, and deeply tied to memory at its core. It carries the feeling of looking back at a moment or a period of life with nostalgia — wondering if what just happened could ever happen again.
Although the painting may initially evoke the atmosphere of a classical chiaroscuro portrait, the process behind it was highly experimental. The work is executed in oil on distressed paper mounted onto panel — a surface that required extensive material research and technical testing in order to make it stable, archival, and capable of supporting oil paint over time.
The dress still reveals the paper beneath, exposing charcoal marks, sketch lines, and the physical construction of the surface itself. In contrast, the flesh is rendered fully in oil, allowing the depth unique to the medium to emerge.
Painted Oil and charcoal on distressed paper mounted on panel, 83×50 cm
